Engine Earthing

This is a nice cheap and simple mod that has a subtle but surprisingly amazing result.

S3_Mon has done it to his S3 which I saw at AmD.

If it wasn't for the fact I had some 8awg cable lying around from a hi-fi install 12 years ago, I wouldn't have even bothered trying as I was a sceptical as you probably are, reading this.

The principle and original posting is here, check this out first.

That's a copy of the original thread, there's a lot of discussion and controversy there but for a few pounds of cable, some ring terminals and an hour or two of time its worth a try and I recommend you give it a try.

The basic premise is that the engine is a poor conductor and if you improve the ground points, you reduce the resistance in the circuit can improve the overall performance of any electrical circuits, i.e. the ignition systems.

The link above shows you the main cable points and how you need to approach this, as I was just having a go I only earthed 3 points.

Earthed the coilpack ground and cam cover

Used a bracket mount near the fuel regulator as a main joint and also earthed the throttle body.

Took the bracket mount directly to the negative battery terminal.

WHY should you try this? It does make a very nice improvement, hard to describe but my car is running smoother than ever, I thought it was just psychological at first but today my first day to work and going for a drive around at lunchtime it is definitely running much better.

Little improvements like the way you pull up at junctions the car and idling is just so smooth. When arriving home normally I'd noticed idle fluctuations, which are now gone, the engine is tickover smooth. I really like this simple and effective mod. As its smooth at Idle it must be good throughout the rev range.

If you are still a sceptic...I cant do any more to convince you, but I am keeping it and may add a few more points.

UPDATE:-

I have just seen UK225's upgrade to his engine grounding.

he had just the right bits left over to let me redo mine! :o)
(Cheers buddy)

Drivers Wing / Throttle body / Gearbox

Coil Pack Ground - Cam cover / Distribution block

The car is running as smooth as ever! :o)
